Apache Trail Scenic Drive
Apache Junction,Roosevelt Dam & Tortilla Flats!
Recommended by: President Teddy Roosevelt - he called it the most scenic drive in America!
There is some really cool stuff to see while riding on this road. The roads are all twisty and curvy and some places have drop offs that are like a million feet down! It's really pretty to drive out here in the country, if you get out and explore there are caves and lookout point trails and good plaes to take pictures! You can use the camera timer and get everyone in the picture!
This is not a journey for the weak-hearted, because this drive is beautiful, yet harrowing at the same time. Arizona State Route 88, otherwise known as The Apache Trail, is one of the most scenic roads in the world and is able to be enjoyed right from the car windows as you drive along the eighty mile loop. The route started out as a wagon trail for those who were helping to build the Roosevelt Dam back in the early 1900s, and contrary to popular beliefs, was not named after an actual Apache Trail. The name Apache Trail was a marketing name that was devised and obviously it worked and has stuck for the last hundred years.
The beautiful scenery includes gorgeous cliffs dotted with saguaro cactus and beautiful dark blue lakes along the way. The roads are maintained in some areas, but in others, due to extreme weather conditions, they are rutted and washed away to the barest bumpy trails. As visitors make their way through the road, they even find some areas where the roads are practically carved into the canyon walls with drops of several hundred feet just inches away. The passengers must have nerves of steel to stay calm, and it is advisable to drivers that they focus on the road and less on the beautiful scenery around them.
As visitors travel along the Apache Trail, the route can be extended depending upon how many detours one takes. Some of the attractions along the way include Goldfield Mining Town at the very beginning of the route, Canyon and Apache Lakes along the way, the quirky town of Tortilla Flat and Roosevelt Dam.
The Cliff Dwellings are a good destination at the end of the drive!!!
