Nicholas' Review:
This place is really interesting! The lady showing us around said there are over 1,500 pictures drawn all over the rocks out here! My brother and I tried to count them all, but we got bored after about fifty. The lady said they made the pictures to tell stories, but their parents must have been nicer than mine, because if I had drawn all over everything my parents would have grounded me for a million years!

Melissa's Notes:
Deer Valley Rock Art Center is an archaeological study site that is dedicated to preserving the past for generations to come. Sponsored by Arizona State University's School of Human Evolution and Social Change, the center is home to a wonderful museum that explains the native influences that have helped to shape the region, as well as preserving and displaying some of the nearly 1,500 petroglyphs, or rock art, that have been found in the region. Visitors can view a short film about the area and then explore the displays of items that have been unearthed here.

The quarter mile walking trail to view the petroglyphs is nicely laid out with examples of Arizona flora along the way. Visitors can look around and see many of the prominent rock art pictures, but if you sign up for one of the tours, the guides are especially helpful at being able to point out some of the more obscure ones in the distance. A note for those who wish to take photographs, it is often better to arrive early in the morning or after the sun is no longer at the midday position, because the bright lighting makes it difficult to even see the pictures, much less photograph them.

When scheduling a tour, please make sure you allow at least an hour and a half for viewing the exhibits and the trail. If children are participating in the group, add in an extra twenty minutes or so because the center staff sets up a fun hands-on activity allowing the kids to create their own rock art out of clay.

As always, no site is complete without a gift shop for trinkets, so before leaving, swing by the Glyph Gift Shop to check out the souvenirs, art pieces, jewelry, literature and more.

Note: Wear comfortable shoes and dress for a day in the sun since there is little shade on the trail.
