Nicholas' Review:
I really liked this place cause it was fun to explore and crawl all around the rock formation. It was neat because you could see all the way across Phoenix!

Melissa's Notes:
Hole in the Rock is exactly that - a big hole in a rock that was formed between 6 - 15 million years ago. However, as basic as it may seem, this is a really cool place to visit! Hole in the Rock is one of a number of scenic rock formations found in Phoenix's Papago Park (which is also home to the Phoenix Zoo, Hunt's Tomb, Desert Botanical Garden, and other popular local attractions), but it is by far one of the most uniquely formed. According to archaeological evidence, it is possible that the Hohokam aboriginal tribe that once inhabited the Phoenix area used light patterns through the rock opening as a natural time instrument to track seasonal solstices.

When you visit the rock formation, there is a short trail that leads up to hole in the rock, but it is simple enough for a family with small children and it should only take around ten minutes to reach the highest point. A rock stairway has been carved into the side of the sandstone rocks, and it winds its way upward so that you can reach the very top for one of the city's best viewing spots. For an added treat, pack a picnic to take with you and enjoy dining al fresco with a view no other restaurant can offer! And of course, make sure you bring a camera with you to capture the best shot of the city around.

I really loved this site because it was a nice free attraction that is very family friendly. It is definitely a quick must-see site for those visiting the Phoenix area.

Early morning is the best time to visit for sunrise views and temperatures.

Jacob Tip:   I learned that the big opening in the rock is like a cave, but not really. Instead it is called a tafone and it has a rounded entrance and smooth walls.
