Friends of the San Pedro River - Birding Center and River Trails along the San Pedro
Recommended by: Cado Daily
This is a neat nature trail; we saw a big turtle walking! It looks very jungly because of the cottonwoods along the river. I pretended we were in the forest. You could hear so many different bird sounds and we also heard an animal in the bushes - but we didn't see it.
Cool - lush, green, shaded walk along the river. You can hear frogs, animals and birds - a lot of birds.
Started in 1987, Friends of the San Pedro River (FSPR) is a volunteer, non-profit organization working to assist the BLM in conserving and interpreting the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (SPRNCA).
They offer amazing guided, interpretive hikes and bird walks along the river and surrounding areas, provide educational programs at schools and community events, as well as run the San Pedro House. They can tell you anything you'd like to know regarding this area's rich history, ecology and archaeology. The San Pedro House is a 1930's era converted ranch house that now functions as a visitor's center and bookstore/gift shop. You'll find a wonderful array of birding, history and travel books as well as CD's, arts and crafts and locally made goods.
This is a great place to visit all year. The huge towering cottonwoods keep the area cool in the summer, and the walk is shaded and green along the river. You can hear frogs, animals and birds - a lot of birds. The trail is longer than you can walk - it stretches for miles. Great for a leisurely stroll, kid's exploration or a mountain biking adventure!
Check out the website for their quarterly newsletter, The River Roundup, to get information on hikes, local conservation efforts, as well as notification of special events such as the annual Spring Festival, held in early May.
