Decker's Review:
Did you know that if an animal doesn’t have a backbone it’s called an in-ver-ti-brate? I’m not sure how to spell that word, but that’s what it sounds like. I learned about animals without backbones at the Butterfly Pavilion. Almost all of the animals there have no backbones. Isn’t that weird? You and me, we have spines which are backbones. So we’re ver-ta-brates. If you look carefully, there are some of those types of animals at the pavilion too!

Mom's Notes:
You’ll find the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster, which is about 15 to 20 minutes from downtown Denver. It harbors an incredible amount of butterflies and other wildlife. About 97% of the animals calling the pavilion home are invertebrates. The collections of invertebrates at the pavilion live in a diverse collection of habitats that features nearly every environment on the planet!

The activities at the pavilion are inspiring. You can snatch an opportunity to watch a butterfly drink nectar from a flower, learn ways to attract butterflies to your backyard, and learn about the sweet smelling Butterfly Bush that attracts butterflies far and wide. 1,600 butterflies fly freely in the pavilion year around.

Exhibits to be sure and view include Wings of the Tropics, Water’s Edge, Crawl-A-See-Em, and Outdoor Gardens and Nature Tail. The Traveling Exhibit Hall will feature various traveling exhibits. You can see what is currently featured by visiting the Butterfly Pavilion website.

While visiting the pavilion you can take advantage of several free educational programs. Spineless Spotlights are such programs. They run throughout the day and are designed to be entertaining and educational. Each program is interactive and encourages audience participation. They are age appropriate and often feature live animals.

Do not plan a trip to the Butterfly Pavilion without reserving your spot in a Sunset Stroll. Sunset Strolls take place in the tropical conservatory. You’ll take a guided walk through the complex at dusk, and have the unique chance to observe the butterflies and their activities after regular operating hours. The strolls are a monthly event. Be sure to plan your visit to include one!

Jacob Tip:   Have trouble finding the perfect gift for the person who has everything? Check out the Adopt-A-Butterfly program at the Westminster Butterfly Pavilion. For about $12 you can purchase a unique gift, help protect the natural habitat of topical butterflies, and receive a photo plus adoption certification for the adopted butterfly.
