Cherry Creek Dam
Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora, Colorado!
Recommended by: The Denver Polar Bear Club
Cherry Creek Dam is a pretty neat place. The entire park basically few up around the dam. If it hadn’t been built years ago the park and maybe even Denver wouldn’t be what they are today. I had so much fun camping! I met people with horses and even got to go swimming and fishing.
The Cherry Creek damn is nestled inside of Cherry Creek State Park. The park is built around an 880 surface acre reservoir. Unique activities at the park include horseback riding, a family shooting range, and airplane model flying. An outdoor recreation facility sits on the grounds alongside camping and picnicking areas. Cherry Creek Dam was built by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1950. The dam prevented flooding in Denver. Today it is one of the area’s great natural resources.
Over 1.5 million people visit Cherry Creek Park every year. Boaters, fishers, campers, swimmers, bicyclists, hikers, horse lovers, and picnickers traverse the park year around. The 850-acre reservoir is a boater and water-skiers delight.
If you can plan to visit the park in during autumn, you will be awe-struck by the fall colors throughout the 4,200-acre park. The park is like a colorful oasis in the middle of Denver’s metro area. Even during the cold of the winter, the park bustles with activity. Winter recreation includes ice fishing and cross-country skiing.
Your pet is welcome at the park. A 100-acre plus “dog off leash area” is open for pets to run off energy and roam free. An additional fee to use this area does apply and details are available by contacting the park.
135 campsites speckle the park and are available year-round. Basic and full hook-up camping are available. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, you could easily camp at Cherry Creek State Park during a visit to the Denver area. The views are breathtaking and there are endless activities to indulge in at the park.
