Denver Botanical Gardens
Family fun things to do in Denver!
Recommended by: Susan Cothern
I never knew plants could be so cool! The gardens have hundreds of plants. A lot of them I’d never ever seen before. My favorite thing here was the class I went to. I learned about a mini tree called a Bonsai. It’s from Japan. I started my own jade plant bonsai and got to take it home! I can’t wait to see it grow.
Denver’s Botanical Gardens are a real treat. The grounds are huge, and there are so many gardens to take in. I could easily have broken the trip into a two day excursion. New and exciting child and family programs are scheduled throughout the year. You’re sure to always find something new each time you visit the gardens.
The Botanical Gardens began as the dreams of local civic leaders, botanists, and gardeners. They wished to build an oasis of plant life in the center of Denver. In 1951 members of the Colorado Forestry and Horticulture Association helped make this dream a reality. The Association hired Saco R. DeBoer—a legendary landscape architect—to fashion a 15-year master plan. Today the gardens occupy three unique locations: Denver Botanical Gardens, Mount Goliath, and Denver Botanical Gardens at Chatfield.
Family activities include Garden Camps, Seedlings (an interactive hands-on class for children 18months+), Family Fun Nights, Family Workshops, Cottonwood Campouts, Scout Programs, and Birthday Parties. Various drop-in programs run daily. Be sure to check out Mordecai Children’s Garden. This is the perfect place for outdoor exploration and play. The garden spans 3-acres and is sure to look different for each visit.
Over 700 species of plants native to Colorado inhabit the Garden’s collection. 42 individual gardens are located here. The Japanese Garden is a real treat with exotic plants in amazing landscaping. It feels like taking a walk through a Japanese oasis! The Romantic Gardens are sure to spark happiness, and the Wildflower Treasures garden is breathtaking.
Nature constantly changes, which means every visit to the Botanical Gardens is a first. Do not miss seeing this marvelous display of plant life! Concessions are conveniently located in the gardens. The drop-in programs will keep the kids entertained. You can easily spend the entire day here without interruption.

|Jacob Tip: An old proverb says, “If you want to be happy for a year, plant a garden; if you want to be happy for life, plant a tree.” In other words, it is important to give back to our environment to promote better life. Learn how to accomplish this by visiting botanical gardens and wildlife preserves.|
