Denver Symphony Orchestra
& Symphony family events around Denver!
Recommended by: Leon Schlesinger
I always thought classical music was boring. I never knew it could be upbeat and hip. The big Denver band is called a symphony. I saw them do a performance of Peter and the Wolf. It was really cool! I want to see another show!
The Colorado Symphony, located in Denver, is the only full-time professional orchestra that performs throughout the year in Colorado. The symphony was originally founded in 1989 as the heir to the Denver Symphony, which dates back as far as the 1920s. The symphony has a rich performance history and is considered a staple of not only the Denver area by Colorado itself.
The symphony hosts a number of family events throughout the year. You can find out the current event list on their website. They tend to list out events well in advance, which makes planning which show or event to catch a breeze. Most people automatically associate an orchestra performance with classical overtones. However, you will find a large variety of musical performances at the symphony ranging from Drums of the World to performances of storybook favorites—such as Peter and the Wolf.
A facet of the symphony to indulge in is their open rehearsals. You’ll be able to watch and experience a final rehearsal conducted by any one of the season’s guest conductors. These are true treats to take the kids to! Seeing the symphony prepare for their performances is a unique experience not available in many places.
An elementary and middle school program called Youth Concert Programs is a cornerstone of the symphony. The program focuses on the building of the orchestra, introduction of instruments, and educates participants on the history of music. High School programs are also available covered the best of Beethoven.
The symphony hosts the Symphony Ball once a year. The ball is a fundraising event designed to raise money for the continual of the symphony. Dates are announced on the website. If you can arrange to attend, you’ll have a stupendous night dancing the night away with the biggest band in Denver.

|Jacob Tip: Classical music isn’t just opera, think Bug's Bunny! It can be upbeat. It can be just drums or just a piano with a few other instruments playing. Check out local symphonies in your area. You’ll learn about different kinds of music.|
