Family fun things to do on Amelia Island!

I liked this place a lot. The jail was cool. I got to go into a cell like the prisoners went into. I liked the stories about the prisoners. They were scary and cool. I got a book and candy at the gift shop.
This is a great little museum that thoroughly describes the history of Amelia Island. It's small enough that it doesn't take all day to wander through, but the exhibits are very informative. The museum is located in the old Nassau county jail and the building itself is full of fascinating stories. There is a jail section of the museum where you can learn what life was like for prisoners and hear individual histories of past inmates.
We took a tour with an excellent guide who made Amelia Island history come alive for us. The known history of the island is incredibly long and interesting. It spans from the Native Americans settling the island in 1000 to present day. The tour revolved around the eight flags the island has been under in its long and varied history. The museum is full of everyday artifacts from the different periods of history that helped the kids connect to the past and made it more real to them.
The exhibits were great for learning about Nassau County, Florida and relating that history to the overall history of the south. Many portions of the museum are interactive to keep the little ones interested. Those interested in political history will find the exhibits particularly absorbing. The museum is within walking distance of the historic shopping district. After you leave you will look at the island with new eyes. This is definitely a great place to stop and get a slice of Florida history.
