Drive a short 100 miles south of Tampa and you'll reach the charming, subtropical town of Port Charlotte, home of the Charlotte Stone Crabs, a minor league baseball team owned by Cal Ripken, Jr. Take in one of their exciting home games at Charlotte Sports Park. Or maybe racecars whizzing by at high speed is more your thing - then you'll love Punta Gorda Speedway, which holds stock car races (usually on Saturday evenings) all year except for July and August. For those seeking a quieter activity don't miss a chance to paddle the miles of Blueways trails as you explore five National Wildlife Refuges.

A bit further south finds you in Cape Coral and Fort Myers, two picturesque towns with a wealth of outdoor activities. Perhaps a round of golf at Coral Oaks Golf Course, an affordable course suited to all skill levels. Or spend a day at the J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, famous for its stunning migratory bird populations. If a rare rainy day sends you indoors there's always the fantastic Imaginarium Science Center, a hands-on learning experience for all ages - they even show 3-D movies!

In the mood for sun, sand and beaches? Naples and Marco Island offer up an idyllic Florida experience like no other with some of the most spectacular soft-sand beaches in the state. They were named in TripAdvisor.com's 2011 Travelers' Choice Awards for the Top 25 Beaches in the U.S., so you know they are great. Vanderbilt Beach County Park provides public access to the Gulf of Mexico, crystal clear waters, concessions and showers. You'll love identifying and tracking dolphins with a master naturalist on Keywaydin Island as part of their 10,000 Dolphin Project.

Shop-aholics will find much to love about Naples - the historic downtown area is loaded with numerous art galleries, home d├ęcor shops and high-end clothing boutiques, while the savvy bargain hunter will appreciate the Naples Outlet Center for name brands at big discounts. And when you get hungry you're in for a real treat as this Gulf Coast region has some of the best seafood around. Indulge in stone crab - the area's biggest claim to fame - at Triad Seafood in Everglades City, a local's favorite that will also cook your own catch. The mahi mahi is a must try at the kid-friendly Riverwalk Restaurant in Tin City, Naples (request a table at water's edge for the gorgeous sunsets).
