Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge
I never realized there were so many Mantee's hanging out all over the place! They are like big dogs in the water! I think this place was one of my favorite things to do! If you have ever been amazed at stories of the Loch Ness Monster - these almost make-believe creatures will amaze you more!
The CRNWR encompasses several islands scattered over 46 acres and was established in 1983 in order to protect the endangered West Indian Manatee. Every winter hundreds of manatees migrate here for the warm 72 degree spring waters of Kings Bay, as they cannot survive in water colder than 68 degrees. Manatees average 10 feet long and 1000 pounds yet are known to be gentle, docile creatures. There is an exhibit area with interactive displays where you can learn all about these playful mammals. There are also picnic tables and a gift shop. In addition, there are numerous companies providing boat tours, as well as snorkeling, diving and kayaking with the animals.
Tours range from $40-$99 per person, check website for specials.
