Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium
It was really, really, fun! There was real trees there.
Mote Marine Aquarium provides visitors with a fascinating array of marine life (over 100 species), working labs and interactive exhibits. This facility takes pride in its high standards for wildlife conservation, research, veterinary care and education and it shows. We learned so much about manatees, turtles and dolphins on our visit to the Aquarium. We also were amazed to watch the aquarists during one of their newest attractions: Narrated Shark Training Sessions. They actually have trained the animals to eat near special targets in order to make sure they stay healthy and get enough food. You can sit in on these sessions, and ask questions, at 11am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Another new, and interesting, exhibit is Sea Turtles: Ancient Survivors. Did you know sea turtles have outlived dinosaurs but they are struggling against modern threats such as loss of beaches for nesting and accidents with fishing gear. Mote has a blind green turtle named Hang Tough who has been living, and thriving, there since 1992. They also run the Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program where they rehabilitate stranded and sick turtles.
If you get hungry while visiting, stop in to the Deep Sea Diner, a retro '50's diner with family-friendly food and affordable prices.
The general admission price includes access to Mote Aquarium, the Ann and Alfred E. Goldstein Marine Mammal Research and Rehabilitation Center and Immersion Cinema.
