at Brazos Bend State Park
Recommended by Housto Astronomers Club
The observatory is an awful lot of fun! You can go and learn about outer space and the stars. They got a big domed telescope that you can look through and because you aren't near the city, the view is really, really pretty.
You can even take astronomy classes and we went on rocket day, where we got to make our own rockets!
George Observatory is located in Brazos Bend State Park, which is already full of different activities that will be a great deal of fun for the family, including hands on gator discovery display and a lovely nature center. The observatory, itself, has a dome telescope and is one of the largest that is usable for public viewing. Since you pay per usage the price can add up quickly (especially if you have a large group), but given that it is such a unique experience, it is definitely worth it.
The George Observatory also offers a variety of different shows and experiences. Every August, the observatory can be visited for a spectacular viewing of the annual Perseid Meteor Shower. The observatory also offers astronomy classes that are tailored to grade level, between k-12. The class is one hour long and is full of hands on activities, but the price is generally somewhat steep. If your child is extremely interested in astronomy, it is definitely a wonderful experience.
They also have classes for higher levels, such as college or adult education. On a more reasonably priced level, they offer a Rocket Day, where children work together to build and launch miniature rockets.
